Herrera statement on key legal win in 2020 census case

“We’re proud to be part of the coalition of state and local governments fighting to ensure that every person in our country is counted.”

SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 10, 2020) — City Attorney Dennis Herrera issued the following statement on today’s decision in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York regarding the Trump administration’s attempt to illegally leave millions of people uncounted in the 2020 census:

City Attorney Dennis Herrera

“This is yet another victory over the Trump administration’s illegal attempts to hijack the 2020 census. We’re proud to be part of the coalition of state and local governments fighting to ensure that every person in our country is counted. This was a great victory today, and we will keep fighting to protect the rule of law for as long as this president keeps trying to undermine it. Everyone needs to stand up and be counted. If you have not filled out the census questionnaire already, please do so today. It is safe, and it is vitally important. You matter. Your voice matters. Our democracy depends on you using it.”

Case Background
San Francisco is part of a coalition of states, cities and counties led by New York Attorney General Letitia James that filed a second lawsuit against President Donald Trump in July 2020 for attempting to, once again, illegally leave millions of people out of the 2020 census. The census is used to determine Congressional seats and apportion billions of dollars in federal funding.
