Gang injunction court hearing tomorrow involves warring criminal street gangs in Visitacion Valley

Court likely to rule on preliminary injunction against ‘Down Below Gangsters,’ ‘Towerside’ in safety zone encompassing both turfs

SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 29, 2010) — A San Francisco Superior Court judge is scheduled to hear arguments tomorrow morning on City Attorney Dennis Herrera’s petition for a preliminary injunction against two warring criminal street gangs that have long terrorized San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood. Law enforcement experts believe the ongoing gang war to be responsible for at least ten homicides in the area in the last three years. Herrera’s civil complaint, filed on Aug. 5, names the Down Below Gangsters and Towerside Gang as defendants in a civil action that seeks to prohibit an array of gang-related nuisance conduct by 41 adult gang members within a proposed “safety zone” covering less than two-tenths of a square mile.

WHAT: Hearing on preliminary injunction against Visitacion Valley criminal street gangs

WHEN: Tomorrow (Thursday), September 30, 2010 at 9:30 a.m.

WHO: San Francisco Superior Court Judge Charlotte Woolard presiding

WHERE: Civic Center Courthouse, Department 302 400 McAllister Street (at Polk Street) San Francisco Please note that while the hearing begins at 9:30 a.m., it is often impossible to predict where the gang case will appear on the Court’s calendar, or the exact point at which the judge will take the matter up. It is generally advisable to be there by 9:30 a.m., understanding that arguments on other cases may be heard first. The case is People of the State of California v. Down Below Gangsters et al., San Francisco Superior Court No. CGC-10 502262, filed Aug. 4, 2010. Additional information is available on the City Attorney’s Web site.
